MushroomGuide.ca is written and edited by the MushroomGuide.ca Editorial Team, operated from Ontario, Canada as part of the GrowersGuide brand family. This page explains how we make our content and how we keep it trustworthy.

What this site is

We write about growing gourmet mushrooms — oyster, lion's mane, king oyster, shiitake, and chestnut — indoors in Canadian conditions, and about cooking what you grow. Our product recommendations are based on published specifications, Canadian availability, and price, not on hands-on testing of every item we name.

Where a piece of equipment has to meet a specification to do its job safely — a pressure canner that holds 15 PSI, a respirator rated for the work — we say so, and we do not offer a cheaper substitute that does not meet it. If the correct equipment is out of reach, we point to a different method rather than a weaker tool.

How we source figures

Growing parameters — temperatures, timings, spawn rates, yields — reflect common practice in the cultivation literature and among growers rather than controlled study. Where that is so, our standard is to attribute it that way (“growers commonly run…”) rather than state it as established fact. Nutrition figures come from published national food-composition data.

We are working through the site adding inline citations, and that work is not finished. Where a figure cannot be traced to a source, our standard is to say so plainly rather than imply one — an unverifiable number presented as sourced is worse than an honest “this is what growers do.”

What we write about — and what we don't

We cover four things: how to grow, when to harvest, how to cook, and what's safe for pets. Cultivation, taste, technique, and recipes — that's the whole site.

We are not a health or wellness site. We do not publish medicinal or "traditional use" content, supplement guidance, or "good for you" claims of any kind. We also never cover psilocybin orwild-mushroom foraging and identification — see those policy pages for why.

Review & fact-checking

Every post is reviewed before publishing for accuracy, for safety (spore handling, sterilisation, pet toxicity), and for compliance with the policies above. Posts carry a publish date, and we add a "last updated" date whenever we revise the substance of a guide.

Corrections

If you spot an error or an out-of-date figure, emailinfo@mushroomguide.ca. We correct confirmed mistakes promptly and update the "last updated" date.
